Often enough that it is worth talking about before we start. Rock changes both the schedule and the price, and it is better to have that conversation at the estimate than in the middle of a dig.

Grade is the thing every other trade inherits. Get it wrong and the foundation sits low, the parking lot ponds, the drain has no fall, and somebody pays to fix it later at three times the price. We cut to the number on the plan, compact what needs compacting, and leave a site the next crew can actually work on.

Cut, fill and site balancing

The cheapest dirt on any job is the dirt you never haul. Where the plan allows, we balance cut against fill so material moves across the site instead of onto a truck. Where it does not balance, we tell you what has to be imported or exported and what that costs before the machines start, not after.

Subgrade and compaction

Structural fill goes in in lifts and each lift gets compacted, because density is what keeps a pad, a slab or a parking lot from settling into a problem two years later. On commercial and permitted work we coordinate with the testing lab so compaction results are documented rather than assumed.

Trenching

Utility trenches, drain lines, footings and foundation excavation. Depth, bedding and backfill matter as much as the digging - a line bedded on rock or backfilled with junk material is a callback waiting to happen. We run a 2 foot minimum trench width on most utility work, which is what our equipment cuts cleanly and what leaves room to bed and compact properly.

Finish grade

The last pass is the one people see, and the one that decides where water goes for the life of the property. Slope away from structures, positive fall to drains and swales, and a surface that is ready for rock, paving, sod or seed without a second machine coming back.
